Meta settles with Trump: $25 (CAD 36) million payout over account ban

The issue of Meta's high-profile decision in 2021 to suspend Donald Trump's accounts on Facebook and Instagram, for which he sued, has resurfaced. A spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg's company has announced that a settlement has been reached. Meta will pay Trump $25 (CAD 36) million in damages.

The decision to suspend Trump's accounts was made following the events of January 6, 2021, when Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden and allegedly called for questioning the voting results on social media.

This was believed to have led to the notable storming of the Capitol by Republican supporters.

Meta concluded that Trump's actions violated the company's rules regarding incitement to violence. At the time, Trump sued Mark Zuckerberg's company, accusing it of censorship. Two years later, the company announced it would restore Trump's accounts, and in January, that a settlement had been reached in which Meta will pay Trump $25 (CAD 36) million in damages. The settlement was reported by "The Wall Street Journal" and confirmed to AFP by a Meta spokesperson.

Trump receives substantial compensation: Zuckerberg to pay him

In January, Mark Zuckerberg announced changes to Meta's strategy, aligning it with the policies of the new U.S. administration.

He decided, among other actions, to appoint allies of President Trump to key positions and to end programs promoting diversity, which were criticized by conservatives.
