"Longlegs" hit theatres on July 12. It tells the story of FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), who, thanks to her supernatural abilities or perhaps just extraordinary intuition, is assigned to a years-long investigation into the elusive serial killer, Longlegs. Although the viewer suspects who commits the crimes initially, the finale is still a big surprise. Before the premiere, Nicolas Cage’s appearance was kept a big secret. In the trailers, only his voice could be heard. In the film itself, he appears in the initial sequence, in a past scene shot in a 4:3 format. When a small, defenceless girl faces Longlegs, viewers do not see his entire face, only his chest and pale lips (photo above).
"Longlegs" earns millions worldwide
New data shows that the earnings of the film directed by Osgood Perkins have surpassed CA$134 million, and let's add that this production cost less than CA$13 million. It is the highest-grossing horror movie in theatres in recent decades and one of the few R-rated films to achieve such success. However, the best-performing adult-oriented film this year has been Deadpool & Wolverine, which raked in over CA$1.35 billion worldwide.
Meanwhile, many people are wondering about the online release. The film's creator announced the release of the production in digital format and on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. On August 23rd at 8 PM Eastern Time, you can enjoy the film in the comfort of your home, and additional formats will appear on the market a month later, on September 24th – Collider reports.
The film will be available on Prime Video and AppleTV+ for CA$34.99. The rental price for viewers in Canada has not been announced yet.
Surprising Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage plays the titular killer, creating an unrecognizable character. Directed by Perkins, the film focuses on a dark mystery involving a killer hunting young girls whose actions are inspired by a cult of dark powers.
"Longlegs" offers more than surface-level horror, referencing occultism and deeper layers of a disturbing plot. Perkins is already announcing future projects that will keep viewers equally on edge. One of them is an adaptation of a Stephen King story, which will premiere in February 2025 and, like "Longlegs," promises to be a significant event for genre fans.
