Regional deputies in the Kurgan region of Siberia unanimously passed new regulations imposing fines for "encouraging abortion" under the initiative of the Union of Orthodox Women, the independent portal Meduza reported on Tuesday.
The new law provides financial penalties for individuals and entities found guilty of encouraging abortion. Ordinary citizens may be fined up to 10,000 rubles (over $140), officials up to 50,000 rubles (almost $700), and legal entities, including organizations and companies, up to 200,000 rubles (nearly $2,800).
The Union of Orthodox Women, with the blessing of Kurgan and Belozersky Metropolitan Daniil, characterized women's right to terminate a pregnancy as "part of the hybrid war against Russia." The organization introduced new sanctions, emphasizing the need to protect traditional values.
The growing influence of religious organizations on politics in Russia
The unanimous adoption of the regulations by regional deputies reflects the growing influence of religious organizations on legislation in some regions of Russia. The independent portal Meduza highlighted these events, emphasizing the tensions between women's rights and political-religious movements.
As reported by the Polish Press Agency (PAP), introducing these fines underscores the complex relations between religious beliefs, women's rights, and current political trends in the country.
