Haqqani's assassination marks another blow to Taliban rule
Chalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, the minister of refugees and repatriation in the Taliban government in Afghanistan, which is not recognized by the international community, has died. Haqqani was considered a terrorist by the United States, which offered a $5 (CAD 7) million reward for information leading to his arrest.

The assassination occurred in the capital, Kabul. A government source, quoted by the Polish Press Agency, confirmed the minister's death. Haqqani died at the scene.
The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, quoted by Reuters, stated that the Islamic State is responsible for the attack.
Chalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was among the key figures in the Taliban government that took power in Afghanistan in 2021. He was part of the influential Haqqani clan, known for its ties to Al-Qaeda and accused of numerous bombings in Afghanistan.
Sanctions were imposed on Chalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani by the US authorities. In the Taliban government, he was tasked with assisting internally displaced refugees and repatriating Afghans abroad. He was also related to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the current Minister of the Interior of Afghanistan.
The assassination in Kabul is yet another act of violence in a region that has struggled with instability and terrorist attacks for years. Haqqani's death is a significant blow to the Taliban government, which is striving to maintain control over the country.
