This case has shaken France and been commented on worldwide. Dozens of men are said to have raped Gisèle Pelicot with her husband's consent, who administered narcotics to the woman. On Wednesday, the 71-year-old appeared in court. She admitted she is shocked but hopes her tragic story will give courage to other women.
I want all raped women to be able to say: "Pelicot did it, I can too". I don't want them to feel ashamed any longer – she said.
The trial—at Gisèle Pelicot's request—is not public. The victim also agreed to the showing of films depicting the rape during the trial.
The Gisèle Pelicot trial. "How could he do it"
Pelicot spoke in court about the shock she felt when she found out what her husband, with whom she had lived for 50 years, was doing. The man allegedly committed rapes for ten years. He drugged her with strong tranquilizers and then found men online to come and rape his unconscious wife.
I'm trying to understand how this man, who was perfect to me, could do this. How could you let these strangers into my bedroom? – she asked during her testimony.
Dominique Pelicot pleaded guilty. Most of his crimes were filmed, which is a key piece of evidence in the case. However, the accused men claim they were unaware that Gisèle was unconscious and, therefore, do not consider themselves guilty of rape.
Gisèle Pelicot also addressed her husband directly. As she stated, she believed her husband cared for her, especially in difficult moments when she struggled with health issues.
You were a caring, attentive husband, and I never doubted you. We shared laughter and tears – she said.
She also mentioned that Dominique administered narcotics to her, most often hidden in meals or desserts he specially prepared for her.
I used to tell him: how lucky I am, you're a dear, you really take care of me – she added with tears in her eyes.
The trial of Gisèle Pelicot began on September 2, 2024. Due to the number of defendants and the complexity of the case the verdict is expected at the end of December.
