Foods to skip for a restful night's sleep: Expert advice
Do you feel the need to eat something shortly before going to bed? A sleep expert warns about what to avoid if you care about getting a good night's sleep.
If we go to bed late, sometimes a late meal feels necessary. However, there are certain foods you should avoid if you want to feel good and fall asleep quickly. An expert has weighed in on the matter, providing insights through an English-language portal.
What not to eat before going to bed?
Rosey Davidson, a sleep expert, explained in an interview with mirror.co.uk why some foods can cause sleep problems or make you wake up after a few hours. What should you keep in mind?
"Eating spicy food close to going to bed can cause acid reflux, which can trigger the brain to wake up excessively (...). High fat, high sugar and high caffeine in chocolate ice cream is a triple whammy in terms of disrupting sleep. The high sugar content can cause fluctuations in your blood sugar, cause stomach issues and keep you alert at bedtime, preventing you from relaxing and falling asleep," explained the expert in an interview with mirror.co.uk.
Diet for healthy sleep
Besides the foods you should avoid, there are those that can help prepare your body for sleep. Rosey Davidson recommends including foods that contain tryptophan, melatonin, and magnesium in your diet, as they support the proper hormones and digestion. Recommended foods include kiwi, cherries, bananas, nuts, chamomile tea, as well as oats and turkey.
