Damaged cables on the Baltic Sea floor: Finnish inspectors state vessel cannot continue sailing
The tanker Eagle S, built in 2006 and part of the so-called shadow fleet, sails under the Cook Islands flag. It is suspected of damaging cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The vessel was detained on Christmas Day.
The Finnish Central Criminal Police are conducting the investigation, and several crew members are considered suspects. Finnish authorities suspect that an anchor dragged along the seabed may have caused the cable damage. The anchor was found on January 7, 2025, at 7 PM Eastern Time.
The vessel is currently anchored near the oil port in Porvoo. Finnish Customs is investigating a breach of sanctions related to the transport of Russian oil. The crew, consisting of citizens from Georgia and India, cooperated during the inspection. The tanker belongs to the so-called Russian shadow fleet.
