It was Fani Willis who initiated the investigation into Trump's case, leading to the decision in August 2023 by jurors in Georgia to indict Donald Trump and 18 of his associates. Among those accused are former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, former White House Chief of Staff.
The grand jury charged them with 41 counts, including document forgery, impersonating government officials, and witness tampering. Four of the accused pleaded guilty after reaching an agreement with prosecutors, but Trump and the remaining defendants opted for a trial.
The trial has stalled
In February 2024, the lawyers for one of the co-defendants, former Trump campaign advisor Mike Roman, raised an issue alleging that District Attorney Fani Willis and the lead investigator, Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade, had formed a romantic relationship, which supposedly benefitted Willis financially due to Wade's employment. They demanded both prosecutors be removed from the case.
Wade voluntarily stepped down, but the trial has stalled.
In the United States, the presidential elections are not the only ones taking place. Residents across all 50 states are electing their congress members; 34 are electing senators; and in 11 states, governors are being chosen. In some states, district attorneys are also being elected. Additionally, 10 states will hold referendums on guaranteeing the right to abortion, while five states will vote on the legalization of recreational marijuana and psychedelics.
