The Dutch authorities have decided to purchase 46 Leopard 2A8 tanks. This is a significant step towards strengthening their army, which was entirely without such armoured vehicles in 2011.

"Tanks are essential for the appropriate combat strength of the armed forces. They possess heavy armament and protect against enemy fire. With the reintroduction of battle tanks, the Netherlands will enhance its armed forces. In this way, we also fulfil the expectations that NATO has of the Netherlands," said the Secretary of State for Defence, Gijs Tuinman.

The Netherlands to purchase Leopard 2A8 tanks

The first Leopard 2A8 tanks are expected to be in service with the Dutch army in 2027, and the last units from the ordered batch will arrive by 2030. From that point, the Dutch armed forces will again have a full tank battalion supporting 500 soldiers.

The Dutch authorities changed their approach to armament after Russia annexed Crimea. Since then, they have signed multiple contracts for new military equipment. In September, the Netherlands bid farewell to F‑16s, which are being replaced by newer F-35 fighters. Plans also include acquiring systems like NASAMS air defence systems. However, the decision to purchase tanks is drawing the most attention. In 2011, due to budget cuts, the Netherlands completely gave up its tanks, opting to lease 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks from Germany instead.

Capabilities of the Leopard 2A8 tank

The Leopard 2A8 is the latest version of the legendary German tank, succeeding the 15-year-old Leopard 2A7. A key feature of the Leopard 2A8 is the EuroTrophy active protection system, previously used in American Abrams tanks. This system neutralizes anti-tank guided missiles and tank ammunition at about 30 metres from the tank by firing counter-missiles with explosively formed penetrators towards the incoming threats.

The Leopard 2A8 also boasts the latest optronics, communication systems, and a reinforced turret roof. Like its predecessor, it has a Rh 120/L55A1 120 mm cannon and a machine gun. The tank is powered by an engine producing 1,600 horsepower.
