Coleman's breakthrough role came in the comedy 9 to 5 (1980), where he played the tyrannical boss, Franklin Hart Jr., alongside Dolly Parton. The film was a great success and made Coleman a star. From 1983 to 1984, he played the title role in the series Buffalo Bill, portrayed the arrogant and selfish talk show host. Another notable television role was the character of Slap Maxwell in "The Slap Maxwell Story" (1987-1988).
