Blueberry bounty: Boost your harvest with kitchen scraps

It might seem like fruit season is behind us, but garden work is far from over. Now is the perfect time to ensure that by spring and summer you can enjoy bushes laden with fruit. Instead of running to the garden store for more fertilizer, head to the kitchen.

Juicy blueberries are one of the delights that reign among summer fruits. They can even appear on the bushes in the fall, and with homemade fertilizer, you can boost the harvest so much that you'll have a substantial stockpile in the freezer for winter. You only need to pull out some forgotten, stale bread from the bread box.

Enjoy blueberries for your health

American blueberries are a true powerhouse of vitamins and minerals. These small, blue fruits support heart, brain, and eye health, and also protect against many diseases. The anthocyanins they contain improve visual acuity and protect against macular degeneration. Regular consumption can help prevent many diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Additionally, blueberries positively impact our appearance, improving the condition of skin, hair, and nails.

Fertilizer for blueberries

When growing blueberries, there is one important thing - these fruits love acidic soil. Maintaining the right pH is the key to success that results in branches bending under the weight of the fruits. The foundation of healthy blueberry growth is providing them with essential nutrients. Various ready-made mixes are available in stores, but you can prepare a natural, inexpensive fertilizer from household scraps.

Simply mix soaked bread with coffee grounds and spread it around the shrubs. This mixture not only acidifies the soil but also provides the plants with necessary nutrients, improving their winter resistance and increasing their yield. This natural fertilizer made from bread and coffee grounds will also help protect blueberries from winter frost.

Coffee and bread fertilizer

Cut the bread into pieces, pour a small amount of water over it, and let it sit. The bread should be plain, without any additions like seeds or onions. After about 30 minutes, add 2-3 tablespoons of unsweetened coffee grounds and mix thoroughly. Coat the blueberry shrubs with the resulting paste, then gently mix it with the top layer of soil. This natural fertilizer acidifies the soil and helps the plants survive the winter.
