Banish bathroom mould: Simple solutions with household items
Have you noticed black spots on the silicone in your bathroom? This often indicates the presence of mould, which can negatively affect your health. Ignoring this problem is not advisable.
Black mould on bathroom silicone is a common issue. When you spot it, it's crucial to act quickly to prevent it from spreading further and to ensure your bathroom remains safer and more hygienic.
Where does mould come from?
Where does this mould originate? In short, mould appears due to excessive moisture, often found in bathrooms. Poor ventilation encourages the formation of black spots on the silicone, for example, under the shower or around the sink. Additionally, mould can develop where the silicone has become unsealed.
Water leaking under the seal creates an ideal environment for mould, which grows from underneath. Regardless of its origin, it's useful to know how to effectively remove it to avoid health problems.
A simple trick to remove mould in the bathroom
One might think that removing mould requires strong chemical agents, like chlorine. However, this is not the case. There are home methods that are safer for your health and the environment. You can use products you likely already have in your kitchen to tackle mould.
Vinegar. Mix vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, spray the affected areas, and wait about 15 minutes. Then, wipe the silicone with a damp cloth.
Baking soda or baking powder. Add a little water or tea tree oil to create a thick paste. Apply it to the mould, wait 15-20 minutes, and then scrub the seal with an old toothbrush.
Lemon juice. Use it like the vinegar-water mixture.
Try another home method if none of the above products are on hand. Use toothpaste, preferably whitening with activated charcoal. Apply it to the silicone joints, wait 15 minutes, and then scrub with a toothbrush. This task should go smoothly, effectively cleaning the seals.
