Avocado hacks: Ripe fruit ready in 24 hours or less

Avocados are packed with valuable nutrients, including essential omega-3 fatty acids. Many people love this fruit for its creamy texture and unique, nutty taste. However, an unwise purchase can mean that you won't enjoy your dream avocado toast right away after returning from the store. Often, you find that the fruit is not properly ripe, but you can speed up the ripening process.

An essential ingredient in guacamole, avocados can be particularly tricky to handle. Avocados are delicious, but when unripe, they are hard and bitter. They also don't taste good when overripe. Once cut, the avocado flesh oxidizes quickly, changing its beautiful green colour to an unappealing brown. If you like avocados, these simple tips will save your breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

How to store avocado?

Proper storage depends on the ripeness level of the fruit. It's best to place hard avocados in a paper bag and keep them in a dark place at room temperature. The fruit should ripen within five days.

On the other hand, soft avocados should be wrapped in plastic wrap to limit oxygen exposure and stored in the refrigerator. However, when purchasing, check for brown spots on the skin, as these may indicate the onset of rotting.

How to make an avocado ripen faster?

Dreaming of guacamole, but your avocado is as hard as a rock? There's a method to make the fruit soft in just 24 hours. Amazingly, you only need to place the avocado in a bag or container with flour. Seal the fruit in the flour for one day in a cupboard, and the next day, the avocado is ready to use.

Among many culinary tips, there's also a method that involves placing the avocado in the oven. We do not recommend this technique as it alters the avocado's fibre structure. You can blend such fruit with other ingredients, but it won't be suitable as a standalone sandwich ingredient or as part of a nutritious salad.

Method for cut avocado

Few people use a whole avocado in one meal, and the other half often ends up in the refrigerator, where it turns brown and loses its flavour. How can you prevent this? Here are two proven methods.

  • The first method is to use lemon juice. Rub it on the avocado, wrap it in foil, and place it on the lowest shelf in the refrigerator.
  • The second method involves using olive oil, which protects the cut surface.

If you want to extend the shelf life of a cut avocado, don't remove the pit. It acts as a natural protective barrier.
