Sixty-six people have been reported missing, but it is considered that all of them may already be dead. Continuous monsoon rains are hampering the rescue operation, and the road leading to the accident site is blocked in several places due to the avalanche.
The avalanche came suddenly
The head of the local administration, Khima Nanada Bhusai, informed the media that the disaster occurred on Friday, July 12. The avalanche came suddenly and pushed the buses into the river.
It is known that 24 people were travelling in one of the buses and 42 in the other. However, these numbers do not account for people who might have boarded later, as it is certain that the buses were overcrowded.
Monsoon season
The monsoon season in this part of the world starts in June and lasts until September. In Nepal, it causes prolonged and heavy rains. Due to the mountainous terrain in this country, avalanches are a consequence.
Already at the beginning of July, the media reported that several people had died or were missing in this country due to flooding and landslides following heavy rains.
