US upgrades abrams tanks with insights from Ukraine battlefield
The U.S. plans to upgrade Abrams M1A1 tanks, as reported by the Army Recognition portal. The modifications will consider experiences from the front in Ukraine.
The U.S. intends to modernize Abrams M1A1 tanks based on their use in Ukraine. These tanks have recently encountered issues related to high vulnerability to modern anti-tank systems, particularly systems like Javelin and Stugna-P. Additionally, the American Abrams M1A1s faced challenges in Ukraine with logistics and high fuel consumption.
The new generation of Abrams
The introduction of a new generation of Abrams in the M1A3 version is planned. This version will be more durable, lighter, and more fuel-efficient. The goal of the modernization is to extend the lifespan and efficiency of the tanks, which is crucial in the context of their role on the modern battlefield.
What exactly do the Americans want to improve? The modernization of the Abrams M1A3 includes:
- Increasing resistance to modern anti-tank systems
- Reducing weight, thus limiting fuel consumption
- Improving mobility
Let's recall that the Abrams tanks delivered by the U.S. arrived in Ukraine in the fall of 2023, enhancing its defensive capabilities in the conflict with Russia. Ukrainian soldiers underwent rigorous training to effectively use these machines on the front lines. Thanks to Ukrainians, Americans can now improve their machines and understand the requirements set for equipment on the modern battlefield.
American Abrams tanks
The Abrams M1A1 tank is equipped with a 120 mm calibre cannon and two types of machine guns with calibres of 0.50 inches and 0.30 inches. The Ukrainian armed forces appreciate these American tanks for their powerful firepower and advanced fire control system, which are part of their equipment. Despite their weight of about 60 metric tonnes, these tanks can reach speeds exceeding 60 km/h thanks to engines with power reaching 1500 horsepower.
