U.S. proposes $8B arms deal with Israel amid regional tensions
Two weeks before leaving office, President Joe Biden decided that the United States will sell arms worth 8 billion dollars to Israel. The White House has already informed Congress of its intentions.
According to Reuters, the transaction includes ammunition for fighter jets, attack helicopters, as well as artillery missiles and bombs. The package will include, among others, AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles, 155 mm artillery shells, and Hellfire AGM-114 missiles.
The agreement requires approval from the House of Representatives and Senate committees.
President Biden emphasized that Israel has the right to defend its citizens "in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law". He also assured that the United States will continue to support Israel by providing it with necessary defence capabilities.
