Donald Trump, the U.S. President-elect, once again stirred controversy by suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state of the USA. According to Trump, "many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State," which would bring them savings on taxes and military protection, reports "Politico."
Trump criticizes Canada
This isn't the first time Trump has criticized Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Recently, following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Trump commented that her actions were toxic and not conducive to good relations. He added that she would not be missed.
Tensions between the USA and Canada rose after Trump's threats to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump accused the Trudeau government of failing to adequately address trade and immigration issues. A meeting between the two leaders at Mar-a-Lago in November did not yield the expected results.
Donald Trump became the 47th President of the USA
The United States Electoral College officially elected Donald Trump as the 47th President of the USA. In the vote, which took place on Tuesday, the Republican secured 312 electoral votes, while his rival in the fall election, Kamala Harris, obtained 226 votes.
The electors, chosen in the November elections, gathered in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia to formally certify the presidential election results. The voting proceeded as expected, reflecting the results from the individual states.
