In 2017, Trump withdrew the USA from the agreement for the first time. Joe Biden's administration later reversed his decision. Now, Trump has decided to take this step again.

- The United States notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary, of its withdrawal, on 27 January 2025, from the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015 - said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. The withdrawal will take effect on January 27, 2026.

Dujarric emphasized that the UN remains committed to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, which include limiting the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius (about 3 degrees Fahrenheit).

What does the Paris climate agreement entail?

The Paris Agreement requires signatory countries to present new and more ambitious plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions every five years. According to the agreement, the latest plans must be made by February of next year.

The Paris Agreement came into force on November 4, 2016, after being ratified by at least 55 countries responsible for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
