Trump appoints hardliners to lead homeland security and border
President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has selected South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the Secretary of Homeland Security, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing two individuals familiar with the matter.
Two high-profile administration positions will be filled by advocates with a hardline stance on immigration: Stephen Miller and Tom Homan. CNN emphasizes that this indicates that Trump intends to fulfill his promises in this area. Miller will be the Deputy Chief of Staff to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, as Vice President-elect J.D. Vance announced.
Meanwhile, Homan, the former head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will assume the role of "border czar," according to Trump's own announcement.
The Department of Homeland Security, during Trump's previous term (from 2017-2021), experienced numerous upheavals. The department had five successive heads, only two of whom received Senate approval, CNN notes. With a budget of approximately $81 billion CAD, the department employs thousands of workers.
