The railway line running through North Sinai, which was reactivated at the beginning of October this year, is approximately 100 kilometres long and connects the towns of Al Fardan and Bir al-Abd.
The final stage of the project involves creating a network of about 500 kilometres that will link the Mediterranean coast with the Red Sea.
Excitement in Sinai
The appearance of a train on the tracks for the first time in 57 years sparked the interest of many people. The Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel al-Wazir, along with high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Railways Authority, attended the inauguration of the service.
According to local authorities, such an investment will significantly boost the economy. Experts suggest it could also enhance tourism development. Local entrepreneurs and officials are hopeful that Sinai will become a global centre for tourism.
Historic moment
Local media shared a video on YouTube showing the train's arrival at the station. It features a crowd of people engaged in the event, which, according to the governor of North Sinai, Khaled Megawer, should be considered a historic moment in the region's history. Cheers from residents and applause welcomed the inaugural train. Many attendees also waved flags.
