Swapping coffee for oolong: A calming alternative to caffeine

Recently, I've been experiencing significant stress, and my nerves have been overly active. I've been relying on cup after cup of coffee to enhance my focus, leading to a headache. That's when a friend suggested a special tea to me.

I love coffee not only for its taste but also for its effects. It's a dependable beverage when I need more energy, improved concentration, or even a moment of relaxation. However, this only holds if I don't consume too much. Drinking too many cups in a day often results in a headache, which is precisely what happened to me. But there's an excellent alternative to coffee out there.

What to replace coffee with?

When we're anxious or dealing with significant stress, it's easy to make dietary mistakes. Coffee, despite its taste and stimulating qualities, should be enjoyed in moderation. It's recommended not to drink more than 5 cups a day. It's worth noting that similar effects can be achieved with other beverages. Recently, a friend reminded me about oolong tea. I was familiar with it but had completely forgotten its benefits.

It’s popular in China

Oolong tea, along with green and white teas, is regarded as one of the healthiest. It's a distinct beverage that combines the properties of black and green tea. It's particularly popular and respected in China, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan.

Its distinctiveness lies in its partial oxidation. This means the tea leaves undergo an oxidation process to varying degrees, from 10 to 70 percent. The oxidation level influences the taste of oolong tea, offering a palette of aromas—from delicate and floral to robust and smoky.

How does oolong tea work?

Opting for oolong tea instead of another cup of coffee is beneficial. Thanks to its content of theine and caffeine, it's effective for concentration. Additionally, it contains L-theanine, an amino acid that calms and soothes nerves more efficiently and quickly. Scientific studies confirm that oolong tea may help regulate cholesterol levels and have a positive impact on blood pressure. Rich in polyphenols, oolong has anti-inflammatory properties and slows aging processes.

Regular consumption of oolong tea also encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, enhancing digestion and strengthening the immune system. To reap these benefits, it's worthwhile incorporating it into your daily routine.

Tea brewing lesson

Water at 85-90 degrees Celsius is ideal for brewing oolong tea. One teaspoon of leaves is sufficient for one cup. After 3-5 minutes, the tea is ready to enjoy. If you prefer stronger flavours, you can extend the brewing time.

Finally, strain the tea to remove the leaves. You can also easily purchase oolong tea bags.
