SpaceX learns from starship explosion, eyes future success
Dr. Tomasz Barciński from the CBK PAN believes that the explosion of the Starship is not a failure but a learning opportunity for SpaceX. Despite the setback, the megafrocket test provided valuable experiences.
On Thursday, just after 5:30 PM Eastern Time, the Starship megafrocket launched from SpaceX's spaceport in Boca Chica, Texas.
After successfully detaching from the Super Heavy booster module, the ship stopped transmitting data about 8 minutes into the flight, at an altitude of approximately 146 kilometres above the Earth.
Dr. Tomasz Barciński from the Polish Academy of Sciences' Space Research Centre emphasizes that the explosion should not be considered a failure but rather another lesson for SpaceX.
Changes in the Starship's design
The new version of the Starship introduced many significant changes. The vehicle was extended by about 2 metres, allowing for a 25% increase in fuel capacity. The fuel delivery system to the engines was also changed, and aerodynamic and thermal shield modifications were introduced.
Dr. Barciński notes that the combination of these changes may have contributed to the disaster.
Elon Musk stated that it might have been a fuel leak, although a definitive answer will have to wait, added the expert.
Tests and technological challenges
During the seventh flight, new thermal protection tiles were tested, including actively cooled ones that have the potential for multiple reuses. Beneath the tiles, an ablative coating was placed to protect the vehicle's hull from heating.
Dr. Barciński emphasizes that technologies have their limitations and sometimes cannot be exceeded.
SpaceX has a method where trial and error is their path. It's possible they may take half a step back when it comes to increasing the ship or making other changes, he assessed.
Successes and the future of Starship
Despite the failure, the first stage of the Super Heavy rocket was successfully captured, which is a significant achievement. Dr. Barciński expresses admiration for SpaceX's technology, which allows for the autonomous capture of the rocket by Mechazilla.
The expert predicts that within a few years, the Starship may take a crew into orbit.
I am constantly full of admiration for this technology, emphasized Dr. Barciński in a conversation with PAP.
