Seoul invests 479.8 billion won in iron dome-like defence system
The government in Seoul will allocate 479.8 billion won (approximately CAD 445 million) by 2028 for developing a missile defence system modeled on Israel's "Iron Dome," as announced on Monday by the South Korean defence acquisition agency, DAPA.
The project to develop the indigenous LAMD missile defence system, designed to intercept missiles from North Korea, involves the Defence Development Agency and defence companies such as LIG Nex1 Co., Hanwha Aerospace Co., and Hanwha Systems Co.
DAPA reported that the system will be able to respond to more targets simultaneously than the Israeli "Iron Dome."
LAMD is primarily intended to protect government and military facilities located in the capital area, which are within range of North Korean artillery and missile systems. This region is home to nearly half of the country's population of 51 million people.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has often threatened attacks, including nuclear ones, on Seoul. In 2024, he ordered the acceleration of military preparations for war.
