Scholz and Putin to meet? Concerns over Ukraine's fate
Roderich Kiesewetter, a politician from the opposition CDU and a defence expert, suggested that Chancellor Olaf Scholz might meet with Putin before the early elections in Germany, scheduled for February 23. According to him, a meeting between Putin and Donald Trump is planned for March.
Kiesewetter shared his predictions on social media. "There are increasing indications that Chancellor Scholz will go to Moscow or meet with Putin before February 23," he wrote on the platform X. He pointed out that the reaction from neighbouring countries and Ukraine itself will not be a surprise. Everyone will unanimously challenge such a move.
Kiesewetter criticized the potential meeting between Scholz and Putin, warning that "Ukraine cannot be a victim." According to him, currently, any peace talks "are happening at the expense of Ukraine and essentially mean surrender".
"The meeting between Trump and Putin is currently planned for March," added Kiesewetter. The portal t-online.de quotes a government spokesperson who denies such plans but at the same time does not rule out talks.
Olaf Scholz spoke with Vladimir Putin
In mid-November 2024, Scholz spoke with Putin by phone. The Chancellor condemned the Russian aggressive war against Ukraine and urged President Putin to end it and withdraw troops, conveyed a government spokesperson in a statement. He added that Scholz emphasized "Germany's unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression for as long as necessary." Despite these assurances, Scholz faced a wave of criticism.
As the dpa agency reminds, already in mid-October, Scholz signalled readiness to discuss a just peace in Ukraine with Putin.
Previously, the German Chancellor had a phone conversation with Putin in December 2022. At that time, he demanded a diplomatic solution to the conflict and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
