Ryan Reynolds hints at stepping back from Deadpool role

Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield, in the show Actors On Actors, had an interesting conversation that revealed that the "Deadpool" star might not return to his iconic role. He has different priorities now.

In February 2023, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds welcomed their fourth child into the world. The star was present at the birth of their first son but spent much of the time leading up to it away from home, on the set of the third "Deadpool" movie. During the film's grand premiere, Reynolds said: "I would like to start by thanking my wife Blake, who is here with me, and my children. If I'm lucky, this moment—meaning the content of this movie—will be the most traumatic experience in your wonderful life."

His words were spoken half-jokingly, half-seriously. In a conversation with Andrew Garfield, Reynolds admitted that his priority now is to be present in his family’s life. "My favourite role is my top priority: dad," promises the Hollywood star.

And what about "Deadpool"? "Deadpool vs Wolverine" is the second most popular movie of 2024. It earned $1.34 billion at the box office. "Honestly, I feel like this character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity, the other is surprise. The last film was six years ago, which has largely been consumed by ‘Deadpool’ for me," says Reynolds.

"I have four kids and I don’t want to be an absent dad. In a way, I feel like I'm dying inside when I see their faces, whether they're playing or doing some sport, and I'm not there with them. I handle it very poorly," he adds.

"I don’t know what the future of ‘Deadpool’ will be, but I know that we made this movie to be a complete experience, not an advertisement or a trailer for yet another movie in the series," summarizes Reynolds. For fans of comic book adaptations, this might not be good news, but we shall see how it unfolds. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans officially bid farewell to the Marvel universe in 2019, and five years later, they are stars in the cast of "Avengers: Doomsday".
