Russian soldier's death sparks family feud over funds

The death of a Russian soldier at the front of the war with Ukraine has caused turmoil in his family. The man's wife hid the fact that they had divorced to collect money from a posthumous settlement, while the soldier's mother did not receive any money. The Russian authorities have become involved in the dispute.

Some Russians view the war with Ukraine as an opportunity to earn money, which can cloud judgment even in the face of loss. An example is the situation of a soldier from Krasnoyarsk.

The man died in the war, and his ex-wife approached the state administration for a payout of 1,200,000 rubles (approximately CAD 13,500). This is the compensation amount for the man's death. The issue arose because the woman was not entitled to these funds. Russian authorities believe she concealed the divorce to fraudulently obtain the money.

According to the independent portal Sibreal.org, the issue came to light when the deceased soldier's mother reported to the prosecutor's office in Russia. She also wanted to receive money for her son's death, only to discover that her former daughter-in-law already had possession of the funds.

The ex-wife claims she was unaware of her divorce from the soldier. However, investigators doubt her explanations because she had previously filed for child support from him. The case is ongoing. The soldier's mother still has not received the compensation the Russian state was supposed to give her, leaving her without financial support.

Russians whose relatives died in the war with Ukraine can request a presidential payout and insurance compensation. Often, mourning takes a backseat, and the focus shifts to money. Sibreal.org reports that many families argue over the money, and their cases often go to court.
