Russia deepens West Africa ties with new Senegal truck plant
Russia is increasing its influence in West Africa through closer cooperation with Senegal. As reported by the Senegalese press, a Kamaz vehicle factory is set to open in Dakar, producing specialized military trucks, including the heavily armoured and mine-resistant Typhoon-K model.

For several years, Kamaz has supplied vehicles for civilian and military use in various African countries. Its products are employed by the armies of Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, and Sudan, among others. The Kamaz-63968 model is particularly popular in Africa, as its reinforced frame offers excellent protection against explosive devices and landmines. The report highlighted that these vehicles are notably effective in the challenging terrains of Africa.
Senegal's selection as the factory site results from the Kremlin's previous actions. In 2018, Russia established military cooperation with Senegal. This agreement encompasses military training for the Senegalese armed forces and the supply of specialized equipment. Russia has made it clear that it is eager to expand its cooperation with Senegal and other countries in the region to boost its defence capabilities.
We are ready to help Senegal and other African countries strengthen their defense capabilities and improve the counter-terrorism readiness of their armed and special forces, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the end of August during a conversation with Senegalese Foreign Minister Yacine Fall.
Senegal is a key trade partner with Russia on the African continent. It is Russia's second-largest trading partner in the sub-Saharan African region, following South Africa. The country imports a significant portion of its wheat from Russia, meeting about 40% of Senegal's wheat demand.
Senegal's strategic position. Russia strengthens influence in Africa
Geopolitically, Senegal holds a strategic position in West Africa. The country has an Atlantic Ocean coastline bordered by Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, Guinea to the southeast, and Guinea-Bissau to the southwest. This geographical position and its role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Senegal is the fourth-largest economy, amplifies its importance in the region.
Senegal is also noted for its political stability, which is unique compared to other West African countries. It is among the few nations in the region that has never experienced military rule, as emphasised by experts from Senegalese media cited by the Polish Press Agency.
Other global powers, such as China, have also adapted to the situation. The powerful Chinese arms company Norinco has recently opened an office in Dakar. Norinco has previously provided Senegal with VN2 infantry fighting vehicles and other armoured and reconnaissance vehicles. Current discussions involve supplying additional equipment, including rifles and ammunition.
