Proper storage tips for preserving coffee aroma

Have you ever bought coffee in a large package? These often come at a promotional price. It's worth taking advantage of this, but you need to immediately ensure proper storage of the beans afterward. Otherwise, their aroma will quickly dissipate.

The shelf life of coffee is quite long, as it can maintain its properties for up to two years. However, everything depends on how the beans are stored. What ensures that coffee retains its aroma longer? Several factors are important.

This is not a good place for coffee

Aromatic, delicious coffee can brighten even a cold, rainy morning. However, to prevent coffee beans from quickly losing their flavour, proper storage is essential. The most common mistake is placing them in the refrigerator. It may seem that a low temperature is beneficial for them, but it's quite the opposite—they lose their unique aroma more quickly. The moisture in the refrigerator also affects this.

Always tightly sealed

Baristas agree that coffee beans need to be protected from air and moisture. Therefore, the ideal place for them should be cool and dark, as they won't lose their flavourful properties. Baristas emphasize that storing the beans in their original packaging, under suitable conditions, is not a bad option. However, it must be tightly sealed, for example, with a zip-lock closure.

It won’t lose its aroma

However, if the package does not have such a closure, it's better to transfer the coffee. Airtight containers work well in this case. They can be made of glass, but then you must be particularly careful to ensure they are not exposed to light, or they can be ceramic. Oxygen, light, moisture, and heat cause coffee to quickly lose its aroma. That's why it's so important to store it in dry, cool places.
