PKK leader Ocalan calls for disarmament in historic appeal
Abdullah Ocalan has urged fighters to lay down their arms and dissolve the organization. This move by the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) could potentially bring an end to the 40-year rebellion against Turkey.
This appeal was conveyed by the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), which read out Ocalan's letter. In the published letter, the PKK leader stressed the need for all groups within the organization to lay down their arms.
- The PKK must dissolve, Ocalan appealed.
Possible resumption of peace talks
Signs are emerging in Turkey of a potential resumption of peace talks between the authorities and the PKK. Previous negotiations have taken place, but they did not yield the expected results. The conflict, which has lasted 40 years, has claimed the lives of approximately 40,000 people. The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.
The PKK rebellion against the Turkish state has been ongoing for four decades, with effects felt both within Turkey and beyond its borders. The classification of the PKK as a terrorist organization by Turkish authorities, the EU, and the USA complicates the peace process. Nonetheless, the emerging signals of a potential return to talks offer hope for resolving the conflict.
