Hurricane John first struck Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday, September 24, as a category three hurricane. After briefly weakening and retreating over the waters, it returned on Sunday as a dangerous tropical storm.
The hurricane hit Mexico for the second time
The AFP agency reported the tragic consequences of Hurricane John’s impact on the Mexican coast. According to their reports, citing local authorities, at least 16 people have died. There are also missing persons, so some local media are even reporting up to 29 victims of the disaster.
On Sunday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed the worst situation in Guerrero. Casualties were also recorded in the neighbouring state of Oaxaca.
Mexicans terrified
The storm caused significant damage and panic in the resort town of Acapulco. Residents and tourists still remember Hurricane Otis, which, in October 2023, as a category five hurricane, caused significant destruction and dozens of fatalities. The situation is problematic for the affected areas' residents and those conducting their businesses there. The fear is also heightened by the increasing frequency of hurricanes in these areas, as confirmed by meteorologists.
Future President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she would visit the state of Guerrero on October 2, the day after her inauguration.
