Mexican president criticizes Trump's proposal to rename gulf
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized on Wednesday that the name Gulf of Mexico is universally recognized worldwide. This was her response to comments made by Donald Trump, the President-elect of the USA, regarding the renaming of this body of water.
On Tuesday, Trump stated that he would like to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. I think they told President (elect) Trump wrong, they told him Felipe Calderon is still president — Sheinbaum commented on Trump's declaration. — But no, different people are in charge in Mexico — she added.
Calderon was the President of Mexico from 2006 to 2012.
At the Wednesday press conference, Sheinbaum also showed a map of the former area of Mexico, which includes territories now belonging to the United States. "Mexican America, that sounds nice" — said Sheinbaum.
On Tuesday, Trump announced that he would impose high tariffs on products from Mexico, which — in his opinion — is practically controlled by cartels. He also promised to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America because that name is much more "appropriate."
