"These state-of-the-art vehicles not only boost our military capabilities but also deepen ties with US forces," stated the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence.

Lithuania receives large delivery of JLTV

JLTVs are considered among the most advanced tactical armoured SUVs globally. Designed by Oshkosh Defense in the United States, they replace the HMMWV. The JLTV's armour ensures the crew's protection against enemy fire from light small arms. A key feature of the vehicles is their modular construction, allowing them to be configured for various missions. The chassis is reinforced to protect the crew from explosive devices and landmines.

The JLTV measures roughly 6 metres in length and 2.5 metres in width. It offers excellent mobility, thanks to its 4x4 drive and independent TAK-4i suspension system. The vehicle's 350-horsepower engine enables it to reach speeds up to 110 km/h. The Lithuanians plan to integrate the acquired JLTVs with RBS70 NG (MSHORAD) air defence systems, to be obtained from Sweden.

The Lithuanians are strongly arming themselves

According to the statement from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence, they ultimately plan to introduce up to 500 JLTV units into service. Deliveries are made under various contracts, with the first signed in 2019. All deliveries are expected to be completed this year.

JLTVs have a strong reputation and have been ordered in large numbers by several NATO countries in recent years. Besides Lithuania, Slovakia and Romania, among others, are acquiring these vehicles for their defence needs.

For the Baltic nation, the JLTV contracts are part of a larger effort for significant military modernization. In recent years, Lithuania has also chosen to acquire advanced NASAMS air defence systems, CAESAR Mk II howitzers, and FGM-148 Javelin missiles. It is also expressing interest in acquiring Leopard 2 tanks in the A8 version and is considering withdrawing from the Ottawa Treaty, potentially enabling the possession and use of anti-personnel mines.
