Keep potatoes fresher longer with this simple bay leaf trick

Potatoes are a staple in many kitchens, but storing them can be tricky—especially when they start to sprout. It turns out there's a simple way to prevent this. Our grandfather has been using a proven trick for years: he puts a few bay leaves in the box with the potatoes, helping them stay fresh longer.

Storing potatoes to remain fresh and not sprout can be challenging. When exposed to light and warmth, they quickly lose their properties and start to sprout, which decreases their quality. Grandparents often use practical, natural methods to help extend the shelf life of potatoes. One of the most effective ways is using bay leaves, which limit sprouting.

Why do bay leaves help store potatoes?

Bay leaves, in addition to their intense aroma, have antifungal and antibacterial properties. Their presence in the box with potatoes can limit the development of microorganisms and inhibit the sprouting process. Bay leaves work naturally to prevent the loss of potato quality without affecting their taste. Just a few leaves are enough to notice that potatoes store better and remain in good condition longer.

How to store potatoes with bay leaves?

To use this method, place a few bay leaves—about 4-5 for a larger amount of potatoes—in the box or bag with the potatoes. Ensure the box is in a cool, dark place, as light and warmth promote sprouting. Storing potatoes in a dry place at a temperature of about 4–10°C is important—a cellar or cool pantry works perfectly. Occasionally check the potatoes, removing any that start to soften or change colour.

Other natural methods of storing potatoes

Bay leaves aren't the only method to extend the shelf life of potatoes. You can also try several other natural ways:

  • Apples: Putting an apple in the box with the potatoes can help delay sprouting because they release ethylene, which inhibits the ripening process.
  • Onions: However, it is not recommended to put onions with the potatoes, as onions can speed up their spoilage. It's best to store them separately.

Storing potatoes with added bay leaves is a simple and effective way to extend their freshness and prevent sprouting. Thanks to this method, potatoes stay in excellent condition longer, and you can enjoy their taste without worrying about them spoiling quickly.
