Italy's floating ambassador: Holy Year indulgence on Vespucci
The historic sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci, flying the flag of the Italian navy, has been granted the status of a Holy Year site. A plenary indulgence can be obtained on its deck.
The Amerigo Vespucci, built in 1931, is considered the most beautiful ship in the world. In 2023, it embarked on a voyage, stopping at 36 ports in 31 countries across five continents. In each of these places, it promotes Italy, its culture, traditions, and specialties, generating great enthusiasm.
In the ports, lines of people form, eager to board the ship, which serves as an "ambassador" of Italy.

The Italian military bishop, Santo Marciano, has granted the ship a special status as a Holy Year site. This means that a plenary indulgence can be obtained on its deck. Such sites are usually basilicas and churches, but now the Amerigo Vespucci has joined them.
According to Vatican News, all spiritual graces related to the Holy Year can be obtained on the ship's deck, provided certain conditions are met, such as a state of sanctifying grace and renunciation of attachment to sin.
Mission of Amerigo Vespucci
Amerigo Vespucci will serve as a jubilee site until December 28 of this year "for sacred pilgrimages and for pious visits among its missions at sea."
The decision to grant the ship the status of a Holy Year site emphasizes its significance not only as a historical vessel but also as a symbol of Italy's spiritual and cultural heritage. While on its journey, Amerigo Vespucci not only promotes Italian culture but also offers spiritual experiences that are available to all visitors.
