The attack occurred on Friday evening (October 11) in Ingushetia, a republic that is part of the Russian Federation in the North Caucasus. The assailants opened fire on the car in which the deputy head of the anti-extremism unit was travelling. Reports indicate that three people, including a police officer, were killed, while the attackers fled the scene.
"According to the media, they fled the scene of the attack and headed towards the neighbouring Russian republic of North Ossetia," Reuters reported early Saturday morning in Eastern Time. An intensive investigation is currently underway, and authorities are searching for the suspects.
The Russian centre for combating extremism, which operates under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has been previously criticized for its harsh methods against opposition members and social activists. In 2019, the assassination of the then-head of these structures in Ingushetia, Ibragim Eldzharkiyev, drew significant attention after he was shot in Moscow. His predecessor, Timur Khamkhoev, was also embroiled in controversy, facing accusations of using torture and being arrested.
In Ingushetia, acts of violence and attacks frequently occur due to extremist activities in the region. The latest incidents have once again highlighted these tensions, attracting considerable interest from both local and international media.
