Mushroom pizza is one of the most popular choices worldwide. These delicate yet flavourful mushrooms perfectly complement the crispy crust, stretchy cheese, and aromatic spices. However, the key to the perfect mushroom pizza is proper preparation of the mushrooms. Should you place them raw on the pizza, or is it better to sauté them? In this article, you'll find tried-and-true advice to make your pizza mushrooms taste even better.

Why are mushrooms the perfect addition to pizza?

Mushrooms are an ingredient that enjoys immense popularity in cooking, especially when preparing pizza. Their delicate flavour perfectly pairs with other toppings such as mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, or herbs. Besides their taste, mushrooms have many other benefits:

  1. They are healthy: Mushrooms are rich in B vitamins, fibre, and minerals such as selenium and potassium. This helps support the immune system and aids in the proper functioning of the body.
  2. They are low in calories: There are only about 20 calories in 100 grams of mushrooms, making them an ideal choice for those watching their figure.
  3. They are easy to buy: Mushrooms are available year-round, and their price is affordable, making them an ideal ingredient for both everyday meals and special occasions.

Before placing mushrooms on pizza, you need to clean and slice them properly. This is the first step to achieving the perfect taste and texture.

Step 1: Cleaning the mushrooms

Mushrooms do not require washing under running water as they can absorb moisture, which can affect their texture. Simply clean them with a damp cloth or gently peel off the skin from the cap.

Step 2: Slicing the mushrooms

To ensure even cooking, slice the mushrooms into pieces about 3 mm thick. Start by cutting the stems at the cap level, then place the mushrooms gill-side down and slice them into thin pieces.

Raw or sautéed mushrooms for pizza?

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether to sauté mushrooms before placing them on pizza. The answer depends on the flavour profile you want to achieve.

Raw Mushrooms: If you're aiming for quick pizza preparation, you can place raw mushrooms directly on the dough. After baking, they will be soft and aromatic, although they may release some water. To avoid excess moisture, slice them thinly and bake the pizza at a high temperature (230°C–250°C) for 4–5 minutes.

Sautéed Mushrooms: If you want mushrooms to be the main ingredient of the pizza, consider sautéing them beforehand. This will give them a more intense flavour and prevent them from releasing water during baking.

How to sauté mushrooms for pizza?

  1. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté for 5–7 minutes until they become soft and start to release water.
  3. Evaporate excess liquid by increasing the heat, and then season the mushrooms with your favourite spices, such as oregano, basil, or paprika.
  4. Sauté the mushrooms for a little while longer until they are slightly browned.

Sautéed mushrooms are perfect if you want a deeper flavour in your pizza. You can also prepare them in advance and store them in the refrigerator to speed up the meal preparation process.

Preparing mushrooms for pizza is not complicated. Just select fresh mushrooms, slice them properly, and season them. If you want a more intense flavour, you can sauté them beforehand. Remember, the key is to experiment and discover your favourite flavour combinations.
