How to enjoy worm-free cherries: A simple TikTok hack

The cherry season is in full swing, and their prices are no longer intimidating. Many of us enjoy these delicious fruits by the pound, as their season is short. It would be perfect if not for one issue: cherries often contain worms. A TikTok demonstrated a trick to make washing cherries easy and effective, highlighting why it is crucial.

Cherries are considered some of the best summer fruits. They are sweet and come in various colours, from light yellow to red to almost black. These fruits offer many health benefits. They are rich in vitamin C and fibre. However, even those who love them sometimes decide to forgo them because of the worms.

Not appetizing

Cherries can host various unappealing creatures. Most commonly, whitish larvae of the cherry fruit fly can be found. Although there is no evidence that they could harm humans (certainly no more than the pesticides present in many fruits), not everyone is comfortable with their presence. TikToker @kozijamamoto showed how to get rid of them.

Worms flee

There is a simple way for the larvae of the cherry fruit fly to be removed from cherries. Washing the fruits alone is not enough. The TikToker used baking soda in addition to water. Baking soda, often used in various kitchen tricks, proved useful once again. This method is both cheap and effective. Take a few tablespoons of baking soda, depending on the quantity of cherries, dissolve it in water, and immerse the fruits in the solution. As demonstrated, this trick causes the white worms to flee from the cherries in panic.
