Highway bridge collapse in China claims 11 lives, 30 still missing

At least 11 people have died as a result of the collapse of a highway bridge in northwest China, reported Chinese state media on Saturday. Search efforts are ongoing for about 30 missing persons.

The highway bridge, which offers a river view, collapsed on Friday evening around 8:40 PM (local time) due to a sudden downpour and flood in Shangluo in Shaanxi Province, according to the official Xinhua agency on Saturday.

This week, heavy rains hit large northern and central China areas, causing floods and significant material damage.

On Saturday morning Eastern Time, rescuers recovered five vehicles from the river. According to CCTV, all 11 victims were found inside.

The AFP agency recalls that in May, as a result of the collapse of a highway section after heavy rains in southern China, 48 people died.
