The leader of the Palestinian Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, was killed on Thursday in the Gaza Strip by Israeli soldiers, as announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Israel Katz. "The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, [was] responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7," added the diplomat.
Sinwar eliminated: Hamas leader is dead
Katz is the first representative of the Israeli authorities to announce Sinwar's death officially. Soon after, the information was also confirmed by the Israeli armed forces and the Shin Bet security service.
On Thursday afternoon, reports began to surface in the media about the death of the Hamas leader.
Chased for years by Israel, the terrorist was reportedly killed in an Israeli military attack in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, along with two other members of Hamas. Later, it was reported that Israeli services were verifying if Sinwar was among those killed.
Architect of attacks on Israel
The 61-year-old Sinwar had been a member of Hamas for decades, spending over 20 years in an Israeli prison, and in August of this year, he was elected as the leader of the organization following the death of his predecessor in an Israeli attack.
Sinwar was widely considered one of the architects of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 were kidnapped. Since then, he had been at the top of Israel's target list. Since the outbreak of the war, he was believed to be hiding in the extensive network of tunnels built by Hamas under the Gaza Strip.
According to the Gaza Strip's health ministry, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli retaliatory actions against Hamas. The Palestinian enclave is devastated and is experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
