The popularity of coffee can be traced back to the 16th century when Leonhard Rauwolf, a German botanist, brought coffee beans from the Middle East. Today, vast quantities of coffee are consumed globally, and Canadians have also developed a strong affinity for it. It's served with cake on birthdays, enjoyed during work breaks, or used to kickstart the day. Yet, green coffee remains largely unknown to many coffee aficionados. It's time to change this, as these unroasted beans not only provide a boost of energy but also offer health benefits.

Green coffee is good for you

Green coffee consists of coffee beans that haven't been roasted. As a result, they maintain their natural green colour and retain many valuable nutrients, notably chlorogenic acid. This is responsible for the numerous health benefits of green coffee.

Chlorogenic acid is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from oxidative stress and the harmful effects of free radicals. It helps delay aging processes and inflammation, which can be beneficial for chronic conditions. Furthermore, due to its caffeine content, green coffee enhances health by boosting concentration and energy levels. It may also aid in weight loss by accelerating metabolism and reducing carbohydrate absorption.

Caffeine also positively affects the heart and circulatory system while providing pain relief and vasodilation. Additionally, green coffee provides vitamins and minerals, making it a valuable addition to the diet.

How to brew green coffee?

The taste of green coffee differs from traditional roasted coffee, being more grassy and slightly bitter. Brewing green coffee is straightforward. It can be prepared like tea by pouring hot water over it. It's recommended to use water at a temperature of about 80-90 degrees Celsius to preserve valuable ingredients. The brewing time should be around 5-7 minutes.

If the taste of the beans isn't to your liking, it can be enhanced with additions such as milk, honey, lemon, or spices. It can also serve as a base for healthy smoothies and desserts.
