G7 pledges $50B (CAD 70B) to Ukraine, condemns Russia-North Korea ties
The G7 leaders, in a remote meeting on Friday, agreed that Ukraine will soon receive 50 billion dollars (70 billion Canadian dollars) in loans as part of the assistance mechanism established at the summit in Apulia last June. During the meeting, chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, they condemned the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
The statement issued in Rome, during Italy's presidency of the G7, highlighted that the leaders discussed numerous specific aid initiatives for Ukraine, including 50 billion dollars (70 billion Canadian dollars) in loans. These loans are to be repaid using proceeds from trading on the financial market, derived from the extraordinary profits generated by frozen Russian assets in the group countries.
Additionally, the statement confirmed the intention to continue "to support the Ukrainian people’s fight for freedom, sovereignty and independence."
The leaders of Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, the USA, Japan, and the EU condemned the growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and announced measures against those supporting Moscow's military capabilities.
Regarding the situation in Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the G7 leaders called for a "peaceful and orderly transition through the definition of an inclusive political process."
They also emphasized the importance of observing the ceasefire in Lebanon.
