Fans are already buzzing with excitement. The latest addition, developed under the Warner Bros. banner, marks another chapter in the vast Mad Max universe. The saga started in the 70s and 80s, with three films starring Mel Gibson, then in the lead role at the height of his fame. George Miller, the visionary behind each movie, returned triumphantly to the franchise in 2015 with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Now, in 2024, he’s back, focusing on a character arguably as intriguing as, if not more so than, Max himself: Furiosa.
Various rumours about the production have been spreading online for months, but not all officially confirmed. The public has been fascinated by Chris Hemsworth's physical transformation for his role and intrigued by his method for building his character. The appetites of movie buffs have been significantly whetted by the first reviews, which have flooded Service X (formerly Twitter), further stoking anticipation.
First reviews of "Furiosa": "Cruel and Wild"
The Hollywood Reporter has been tracking viewers' early reactions. Naturally, the initial feedback tends to be more emotional and enthusiastic but provides some insight into what audiences can expect from the premiere. Based on these early opinions, "Furiosa" is reportedly stunning visually, loaded with "cruel and wild action," and demonstrates the acting talent of Anya Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth.
Some speculate that "Furiosa", expected to rake in huge profits (recall that "Fury Road" earned almost CAD 380 million, setting a franchise record), may not quite reach the heights of the film starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. This could disappoint a significant portion of the audience, who, based on trailers, anticipated a similar production level. Nevertheless, according to some viewers, Miller's latest creation still promises to be one of the best action films of the decade, if not in the entire history of cinema.
"I could happily watch Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne [actress portraying the younger version of the titular character – author's note] embody Furiosa for 15 hours, despite the film sometimes struggling with uneven pacing due to its bifurcated storyline. It doesn't mirror the excellence of 'Fury Road,' but it doesn't need to", another viewer comments.
"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" by George Miller premieres on Friday, May 24, Eastern Time.
