Fashion face-off: Gen Z's long socks vs. Millennials' ankle trend

It turns out that Generation Z (Gen Z) and Generation Y (Millennials) can be distinguished by their socks. Young people set new fashion trends and openly mock those who dress differently, pointing out their outdated style. What model of socks are we talking about?

Let's keep in mind that Generation Y includes people born from 1980 to 1997 or 2000. Meanwhile, Generation Z starts from 1997 or 2000 and ends around 2010 or 2012. These dates may vary depending on the source.

Generation Y and Generation Z – style differences

It's no secret that every generation has its preferences, including those related to clothing. It turns out that Millennials and Generation Z can often be distinguished at first glance. And the key factor here is style.

On the internet, especially on TikTok, there are lots of humorous videos on this topic. What are the main differences? Millennials love tight skinny jeans, and shirts or T-shirts must always be tucked into their pants. Meanwhile, Gen Z wear only wide-legged pants, including wide-leg models, cargo pants, or jorts, and the top of their outfits always hangs loosely.

Your socks say a lot about you

There's one more significant detail that differentiates these two generations. Surprisingly, it's about socks, precisely their length. Millennials prefer short ankle socks—ideally, they shouldn't be visible above their shoes. On the other hand, Gen Z considers this the biggest faux pas and always wears long socks with sneakers or trainers, even up to mid-calf.

The style differences between these two generations are enormous, based basically on opposites. But maybe we should end this generational ostracism and just dress in a way that feels good?
