EU to impose tariffs on Ukrainian egg imports amid high volumes

EC spokesperson Olof Gill informed the PAP on Wednesday that the European Commission will introduce tariffs on the import of eggs from Ukraine within the next two weeks. In 2024, the import of eggs from this country exceeded the average import volume recorded in recent years.

This year, the EU approved the extension of trade liberalization with Ukraine, suspending import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural products for another year, until June 5, 2025. This aims to support Ukraine in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion.

Under the new regulation, the EC can take swift action and impose any measures it deems necessary in case of significant disruptions in the EU market or the markets of one or more member states due to imports from Ukraine.

The EC decided on Tuesday to impose tariffs on the import of oats from Ukraine.

The EC can also activate a "safety brake" in the case of particularly sensitive agricultural products: poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, grits, corn, and honey. If their import exceeds the average import volume recorded in the second half of 2021 as well as in the full years of 2022 and 2023, it will be possible to reimpose tariffs. This happened in the case of oats and will happen in the case of eggs.
