In New York City, a grand jury indicted Luigi Mangione for the first-degree murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The incident occurred on December 4.

According to CNN, eyewitnesses reported that a masked man lingered near the entrance of the Hilton hotel for several minutes. When the victim appeared, the attacker fired several shots in his direction, then got on a bicycle and headed towards Central Park.

As per the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, the 26-year-old Mangione is also facing charges of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, and four counts of illegal use of a firearm.

Prosecutor Alvin Bragg described it as a "frightening, well-planned and targeted murder." He stated it was intended to shock, draw attention, and intimidate, occurring in one of the busiest parts of the city, threatening the safety of residents, tourists, commuters, and businesspeople. He noted that the terrorism charges were justified.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch criticized the social reactions following the murder. "Let me say this plainly. There is no heroism in what Mangione did. This was a senseless act of violence. It was a cold and calculated crime that stole a life and put New Yorkers at risk. We don't celebrate murders, and we don't lionize the killing of anyone," Tisch said. She characterized any attempt to rationalize the murder as "vile, reckless and offensive" to the principles of justice.

Legal steps ahead

A spokesperson for New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she will seek an extradition order for Mangione, who was arrested in Pennsylvania, once an indictment is issued. The police discovered a weapon, fake documents, a notebook, and a manifesto criticizing the U.S. healthcare sector, large corporations, and in particular, UnitedHealthcare in his possession.

Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a prominent attorney and former chief assistant district attorney in Manhattan, will represent Mangione in New York court. She declined to comment on the case.
