Attempted assassination of Trump
The attempted assassination of the former president took place a few minutes after the speech began in Butler, about 50 kilometers from Pittsburgh. Just after the shots were heard, the former president, holding his ear, hid behind the podium and then was covered by the Secret Service agents protecting him.
Trump, with a bloodied face and ear, stood up on his feet under his own power, shaking his fist towards the crowd, to which the crowd responded by chanting, "USA!". The security, shielding Trump, led him off the stage and escorted him to a car, which took him to the hospital.
As announced in a statement issued by the US Secret Service, the assassin "fired several shots towards the stage from an elevated position outside the gathering area" and was killed. It added that one rally participant was killed, and two others were wounded and are in critical condition.
