BMW faces fallout after illicit car shipments to Russia
Although it is prohibited, over 100 BMW cars were sent from Germany to Russia. The company is taking action, including against employees, reports Deutsche Welle.
The Munich-based car manufacturer BMW discovered irregularities related to the export of cars to Russia. According to the company's statement, the practice was uncovered by internal audits. Further sales of cars have been halted.
The BMW Group announced its decision to terminate the employees primarily responsible for the situation.
In doing so, the company confirmed reports by Business Insider. According to the service's information, more than 100 high-quality vehicles were shipped from the BMW plant in Hanover to Russian customers.
Strict embargo
As a result of Russia's attack on Ukraine, international trade with Russia is subject to various sanctions, including those imposed by the European Union. There is a strict embargo on car deliveries to Russian customers.
According to BMW, companies operating in different sectors are affected by this issue—their products are available in Russia, even though the companies themselves have complied with the sanctions. This typically involves imports coming through the so-called grey market. BMW Group assures that it is trying to prevent such actions.
