The meeting lasted about an hour and was organized due to growing concerns about the president's health. During the discussions, one of the governors asked Biden about his health condition. The president replied that he had recently undergone a check-up and assured them his health was good. He knocked on wood, reported the Politico portal, citing two anonymous sources.
President Biden's statement came just a few hours after White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre avoided direct questions from journalists about whether the president had been examined by doctors following the debate with Trump.
Meeting with the governors
Two Democratic governors, Michelle Lujan Grisham from New Mexico and Janet Mills from Maine, expressed their concern about whether Biden can still win in their provinces. In the 2020 election, Biden defeated Trump in New Mexico by 11 percentage points and in Maine by 9 points.
After the meeting, Governors Tim Walz from Minnesota, Wes Moore from Maryland, and Kathy Hochul from New York told reporters that they still support Biden. Hochul stated that "President Joe Biden is in it to win it. And all of us said we pledged our support to him because the stakes could not be higher."
- What we saw in there today was a guy who's the guy all of us believed in the first time could beat Donald Trump – and did beat Donald Trump – said Walz, referring to the 2020 election. The Governor of Minnesota is the chair of the Democratic Governors Association and initiated the meeting with Biden after the governors gathered to release emotions and express sympathy regarding the state of the Democratic presidential campaign.
Biden's health has been a major topic of discussion for months ahead of the November elections in the U.S. After the recent debate, it became a primary concern for the Democratic Party's campaign team. There are even informal talks about potentially changing the candidate.
