Coffee or tea grounds and leftover food on dishes can build up in the drain. At first glance, it may seem like there's nothing there. However, after removing the "basket" and the metal part, the situation will be completely different. Over time, the lingering food remnants will start to emit an unpleasant odour and become a large breeding ground for bacteria.
We must remember that if we don't clean the sink and drain, sooner or later, we will cause a blockage in the pipes. In extreme cases, this will require the help of a specialist.
Home remedies for cleaning the drain
Before reaching for chemical agents that have a highly corrosive composition and can be dangerous to our health, try home remedies. They may prove to be much better, and in addition, they offer a much more affordable alternative compared to store-bought products.
One of the most effective methods for unclogging the drain is a mixture made from baking soda and vinegar. Simply pour 125 millilitres of baking soda and 125 millilitres of vinegar into the sink, then place a cloth to plug the drain. The resulting foam will begin removing the dirt. After about 30 minutes, remove the cloth and for better results, pour boiling water over everything.
The second tip helps us take even better care of cleanliness. Few remember to clean the drain under the "basket."
How to do it? Pour 4 teaspoons of baking soda, 125 millilitres of vinegar, squeeze just under half a lemon, and mix. Remove the "basket" and unscrew the lower part of the drain. Using a toothbrush, scrub the entrance to the pipes with the prepared mixture.
