Tensions in the United States are rising with each passing hour. American and international media are asking one question: Who will move into the White House?
The Reuters agency signals that the winner might not be known for several days after Tuesday's voting. Trump has already indicated that he may attempt to contest a loss, as was the case in 2020.
The candidates will spend the most important evening with their teams, families, and voters. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will spend the upcoming evening at Howard University in Washington, her alma mater. Her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, will be in Palm Beach, Florida.
The latest pre-election polls indicate a slight lead for Harris supporters over Trump voters. In a PBS poll conducted from October 31 to November 2 with a sample of 1,300 respondents, Harris had a four-point lead: 51% of citizens want to vote for the current vice president, while 47% favour the former president.
Interestingly, 8% of Republicans intend to vote for Harris (up from 5% a month ago), while only 4% of Democrats plan to cast their vote for Trump.
Presidential elections in the USA. What awaits us?
On November 5, when the last polling stations close on the West Coast and in Alaska at 1 a.m. ET the following day, it will mark the end of the election marathon and the beginning of another lengthy process, comprising: vote counting, resolving potential disputes, certifying results, voting in the Electoral College, formal confirmation of the winner by Congress, and the new president's inauguration.
However, similar to four years ago, we should expect that vote counting in some states may take several days. Among the slowest are the largest ones - California and New York - but also likely the most crucial for the election outcome, Pennsylvania.
Although it is theoretically possible that media and research centres will announce the winner on election night, polls suggest that the differences between the candidates' results will be minimal, and we will learn the winner in the following days, just like in 2020.
